De Bootje Gazette
October 2003

Archiving of De Bootje Gazette

Over the years, we've collected some terrific information about DEBOO. Most of it has been published in this Newsletter. However, as we present new Issues via this electronic medium, all of the old ones end up in 'the black hole' of the Internet. That is, they are unavailable to new readers. John S. DeBoo at Albuquerque, New Mexico, is our DEBOO Family Archivist, and we suggest contacting him first via e-mail (jsdeboo@abq.com) to see what he might have of interest.

As backup, a few hardcopies have been produced over the years, and I have a few remainders for sale at production/mailing cost. Just contact me via e-mail address: deboo@pacificcoast.net

On the assumption Issue 5 (2003) might be the last, I plan to have additional sets of all five Issues bound and available for viewing and/or loan at various locations. Some of these individuals and institutions already have copies of Issues 1-3 and other DEBOO-related documents. The plan is to complete distribution of the hardcopy collections of the Gazette by January 2004. The planned distribution list includes:

Debow Family Genealogy Forum

Readers can check out this Forum at http://genforum.genealogy.com where several name variants are listed: Debow, DeBow, Deboogh. When I last checked, a year or so ago, most of the folks involved were residents of the USA.

Military Records

There are several good sources of information about DEBOO individuals and their military service records for various countries. One specializing in UK soldiers killed in action is the Soldiers Died in the Great War CD-Rom prepared by the Naval & Military Press Ltd, PO Box 61, Dallington, Heathfield, East Sussex, TN21 9JS.

For example, it contains the following information for 3/10799 Private James J. Deboo: He belonged to the 1st Battalion, Northamptonshire Regiment. He was born at Islington, Middlesex; enlisted at Perterborough, Northants (later Cambridgeshire). He was killed in action on 27 September 1916 in the 'France & Flanders' theatre of war.

Online Dictionaries

If, for example, you need a reliable dictionary to translate Dutch to English, browsing the Internet will likely produce several sites with the desired reference.  The dictionary I have bookmarked at present is: www.ectado.com/online/diction.

There are quite a few good French/English/French dictionaries available online.  Try: www.wordreference.com
